4 Tips To Be More Mindful At Work

Its so easy for your workday to get off track - sometimes the smallest thing can send your stress levels through the roof with no signs of returning any time soon!  The impact that this has on your mind and body is damaging and simply not worth it but with a few small changes you can cultivate mindful habits that keep your work day - and you - running smoothly.

It takes no extra time to practise mindfulness throughout your day, the benefits include a calmer more focused mood, a clear mind when approaching difficult situations and of course helps to maintain happy relationships with your colleagues.

Here's my four tips for taking a more mindful approach to your work day...

START YOU DAY RIGHT

Creating a morning routine is a great way to get your day off on the right foot.  Simply making time to nourish your body, rehydrate and exercise are all welcomed by your mind and body - a vision of perfection is not the goal here and so start small - a big glass of water, healthy breakfast and parking a little further away from your building all makes a difference.  Read more about creating a holistic morning routine.

MINDFUL BREATHING

You don’t even need to leave your desk to practise mindful breathing - but please do if you can.  Sit comfortably and focus on the feeling of your breath moving in and out of your body.  Resist the urge to control it, just experience it coming and going naturally.  Let thoughts, emotions and sounds arise around you, let them pass by like clouds while you stay present with your breath.  Practising this for just a couple of minutes can help restore balance and leave you feeling in control and much happier.

CREATE REGULAR CHECK POINTS

Rushing from one task to another on auto pilot can easily cause overwhelm.  Avoid it by creating regular check points throughout your day to see how you’re feeling.  This helps you to recognise anxiety and gives you time to resolve it rather letting it fester and than taking it home and ruminating all evening.  Try and create at least two check points in your day - morning and afternoon - they can be anything from tea breaks to bathroom breaks, whatever you can manage.

LEARN TO RECOGNISE STRESS

Stress in the workplace is too common but by listening to your body you can learn to spot the early signs and deal with it quickly before it takes hold or escalates.  Increased heart rate, feeling irritable or anxious and headaches are all classic signs that something is wrong.  Make it a priority to remove yourself from the situation as soon as possible - a bathroom break is the perfect excuse - and practice mindful breathing as detailed above.  It'll make all the difference and allow you to return to the situation with more balance and perspective.
