How do you begin each day? Do you begin in a positive mood, ready to make the best of the new day ahead? Or do you roll out of bed feeling tired and irritable? If you’re like most other people, you probably start each day in a neutral mood. You react to the things and people around you. Encounter a bad driver on your journey to work, for example, and you’ll be in a bad mood. Speak to a friendly barista when you’re picking up your morning coffee and you’ll walk away with a smile.
Embracing every day with a feeling of positivity is a wonderful thing to do and so I’m going to introduce you to a few habits to help you start your day in the best of moods - try them and see how you get on
Have you ever had a poor night’s sleep and struggled to get through the following day? It’s hard work, isn’t it? Yet if you focus on developing a good sleep habit, you will be surprised how much better you feel going into each day. It will take time to develop this, but if you begin now, you will soon notice a difference in how you feel. Some of the other habits I’m about to mention will also become much easier when you start by improving your sleep first.
I am a great lover of lists. Each day, as I finish work, I look ahead to my list for the following day. I make changes if I need to. I add or delete things. I don’t put things off if I can help it. I plan my meals, so I can be sure I have nourishing food to eat each day. I factor in time for me too, short blocks of time here and there that help me to pause and rebalance. Thoughtful planning is a great habit to get into and it really helps you get the most out of every day.
Have you tried consciously smiling your way through the day? Not every moment, of course, but it’s almost impossible to feel negative if you smile. And, if you smile and say hello to people, you might be surprised at the reaction. When you’re able to connect to the world around you, it really does lead to more positive results.
GET UP EARLIER
This one is difficult if you’re naturally a late riser. But if you make sure you can tick off number one on our list, you’ll find it gets easier. When your mind and body get enough sleep, getting up earlier is simple. And it gives you time to start the day in the best way for you. That could be practicing yoga or meditation. Or maybe you’ll go on a nice long walk with the dog to get a blast of fresh air to begin your day. Whatever you do, I guarantee you’ll never look back once you discover how good it feels to give yourself some extra time in the mornings.
PRACTICE FEELING POSITIVE
Smiling helps with this one! No one likes to feel negative, but it is easy to get on that slope if you’re not careful. Some people find it helps to have a mantra – a thought or two they can start each day with. Find some affirmations that work well for you – positive statements that get you in the right frame of mind each day. You can find plenty of inspiring affirmations and statements online, or you can create your own. It doesn’t matter if they seem strange – only you will know about them, and if they work for you, that’s all that matters.
How often do you stop and appreciate what you have in life? Most of us are guilty of always thinking ahead to what we need to do each day. We spend so much time focusing on what must be done, and what we could do in the future, we forget to appreciate the moment. Be grateful for the good you have in your life and think about these things each day. It’s a great way to start the day too, especially if the day feels as though it is going to be a challenge. It’s a lovely way to unwind once the day is done as well.
So, there you go – six habits that can help you embrace every single day. Try giving one – or two a try and you’ll soon notice the difference in your life and the way you feel.
