Now that we’ve waved goodbye to winter, you might be feeling ready to press reset and get moving towards some of those projects and intentions you have in mind. Before you get started though it’s important to take a look over your wellness routine (or even start a new one) to make sure that your energy remains consistent and you don’t hit burnout before the season is over…
Ready to upgrade your wellness routine? Here are a few tips on getting started…
MAKE A COMMITMENT TO YOURSELF: Before starting anything new I think that it’s important to make a commitment to yourself. Why? Because, let’s be honest the motivation that you feel at the beginning of something new can soon start to wane. And, when you lose your connection with the reason why you started in the first place then it’s easy to go off the rails. So, take a few minutes and think about what focusing on your wellness means to you, how it would make you feel and what you are willing to commit to making it happen.
ACKNOWLEDGE WHERE YOU ARE: It’s easy to start this process by berating yourself for all the things that you’re not doing but there’s probably at least one thing in your wellness routine that’s working. (don’t worry if not, we all have to start somewhere). Acknowledge what you are doing well before moving on.
CREATE A TARGET: We can’t reach a destination if we don’t know where we’re heading and so set yourself a target or two. If you’re like me then this is where you’re likely to go overboard and set yourself 10 new targets, convinced that you can achieve them all. I’ve learnt that this is the easiest way to feel demotivated. It’s much better to pick 2 or 3 things that you can make real progress with rather than 8 that you can barely get started. Here are a few ideas…
TRACK YOUR PROGRESS: I find this to be a great way to keep my motivation going. As you’re working on upgrading your wellness routine, write down your daily progress in a journal or notebook. Or keep a habit tracker somewhere you can see it and tick off every day that you reach your goal.
CELEBRATE: When you reach a goal, no matter how small, celebrate. How you do this is personal preference, it could be a trip to your favourite place, a quiet afternoon to relax, fresh flowers or a gift to yourself to signify the progress that you’re making.
So in a nutshell, that’s how I approach upgrading my wellness plan. I go through this process every month to make sure that I’m moving forward and that my own needs haven’t been left behind while i work. I encourage you to do the same and get started today on creating a plan that works for your health and wellbeing.
