7 Ways To Reconnect to Yourself When You’re Feeling Lost

At some point or another, I think most of us have lost track of who we are – I’m sure that you can relate? One day you just stop and realise that you feel adrift and that your life feels off track. Feeling a little lost and disconnected can happen at any time of life and is absolutely normal - especially given the challenging times we’re living through.

While it’s a deeply personal path and one that often requires a little alone time and contemplation, I wanted to share a few things that have worked for me over the years in the hope that one or two of them might help you find your way back to yourself.

Acknowledge that you feel lost
Recognising that you’re feeling disconnected does at least give you a place to start from.  Embrace the emotional unease you’re feeling and try to see it as something positive – a signpost to help guide you towards the turning point you need to rediscover yourself and your purpose.

Create a New Habit
Trying to reconnect to yourself or your spiritual path can feel overwhelming. You might think that only a grand gesture or action will help you find your way.  While this can sometimes be the case, it’s more common that lots of smaller steps make the most significant difference.

So, try stepping back from where you are. What small changes could you start making; habits that fit easily into your day. Think about what you used to enjoy before you began to feel disconnected? Maybe you loved to run, spend quality time with friends or lose yourself in a good book? Perhaps you meditated or had a creative hobby? See how can you bring ono or two of these things back into your life.  They can feel like such simple changes, but they give you a solid foundation to build on.

Buy a Journal
Even if you’ve never tried it, find a beautiful journal or notebook and pour your thoughts and feelings into it. If you feel uncomfortable about leaving your words where someone may read them, write on a piece of paper that can be burnt or destroyed. Simply get those thoughts out of your head; it doesn’t need to make sense or even be in actual sentences. Write until your mind becomes clearer; this could take some time the first time around. I love this process and always grab a pen and paper whenever I feel stressed or anxious.

Try something new
New experiences bring us out of ourselves and break the pattern of everyday life, especially when it’s all become a little too routine. While it can be a challenge to get out much during lock down, you can still explore new online classes and social groups, try new recipes and explore seasonal produce that you haven’t cooked with before, read from a new genre or listen to music that you’ve never heard before. These will all boost your creativity and get your mind thinking in different ways - be sure to give a few of them a try.

Find time for yourself
This could be as simple as taking a few minutes to pause and breathe deeply between homeschooling lessons - but, it’s still time for you. Work with what you have. These short pauses give you time to check in with yourself and create calm in your day. Build on them slowly and use these brief moments to establish a peaceful inner space to retreat to whenever you need it.

Listen to Your Body
Listening to your body cultivates a strong foundation for reconnecting with yourself.

I find yoga helpful for doing this, but you could walk, run or dance - any movement done mindfully will help you find your way. Listen and make changes as you need to. Even if you feel uncomfortable with your body, please don’t resist doing this - we’re all human, and no-one is perfect.

Create Space
Create space in every way you can, clear out your wardrobe, kitchen cupboards, and desk; everything you can. Why? Because to reconnect, we have to let go of a few things, and physical clutter is a great place to start. It helps us let go of the past and create space in our lives; room for the universe to send us more of what we ask for.

There’s never going to be a better time to start than now. So, what can you do today to help build a new sense of connection in your life? Pick something from the list above and take a small step forward.
